Case Study
UX Process Fork+Kids Mobile App
A Passion Project
Most of my career has been under Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Therefore, I’m unable to share a majority of my work. This case study is a passion project I’ve worked on over the past several years. I’ve used this project to sharpen skills and keep up with the mobile landscape.
Client
Dandelion, (previously known as Fork+Kids) a fictional company.
Overview
Dandelion, initially known as Fork+Kids, is an app inspired by the challenges of going out to eat with children in tow.
Client Need
An app that will help busy adults find a great dining option for their adult and kid dining crew.
Key Strategies Implemented
Discovery
Competitive Analysis, Card Sort, Contextual Inquiry Research, User Profile Development, Participatory Design, Paper Prototypes, Affinity Mapping, Task Analysis Testing, Synthesis, Problem Reframing,
Delivery
Design System Development, Interaction Design Prototype (Figma)
In Progress
Refined Design System, Refined Design Prototype (Figma), Future Roadmap
Process
UNDERSTAND: Competitive Analysis, Card Sort, User Research for User Profile Development
CONTENT STRATEGY: Reframe the Problem
IDEATE: Participatory Design, Paper Prototype
VALIDATE: Task Analysis Testing, Discovered Another User Profile
CONTENT STRATEGY: Reframe the Problem Again, How Might We - Accommodate the New User
VALIDATE: Digital Interaction Design Prototype, Task Analysis Testing
REFINE: Refine the Design
Outcomes
As with many design accommodations, this app would also help folks who may not have children. For instance, folks who are in wheelchairs would benefit from knowing which restaurants are more accessible. Trans and non-binary people would benefit from family bathrooms (which are gender neutral). Anyone with a food allergy would benefit from the food allergy search settings.
UX Research and Testing Process
Competitive Analysis: Find a Restaurant
Urbanspoon
Shake/slot machine-style feature to find restaurant randomly, or with some control by locking certain selections.
Map provides nearby restaurants in a specified radius of users location (GPS)
Search allows users to find a specific restaurant, based on GPS of device
Card Sort
8 users that match our key user profile
Results used to define: how users expect to see information organized and navigation structured; categories and naming conventions; and relationships between items.
User Profile
User Testing
Using photos of the paper prototype. (I loaded them into the prototyping application POP)
Asked users to perform five key tasks in usability test
Goals:
There were two goals of this testing. We needed to assess business feasibility of the product concept. And, we wanted to gather additional user requirements.
